- Do not consume alcohol one week before your surgery.
- Stop taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications 15 days before your surgery.
- Stop taking birth control pills 20 days before your surgery.
Course of the Procedure
The surgeon prepares the procedure by marking the contours of the area to be treated on the patient’s skin, as well as the location of the incisions to be made. Then, the time for the surgery arrives. The procedure consists of three distinct phases:
Abdominal Liposuction
A specific solution is injected into the fat to liquefy it and make it easier to aspirate. The surgeon then makes an incision in the abdomen and inserts a cannula connected to a vacuum. The surgeon starts by suctioning the fat from the abdomen and flanks, using large back-and-forth movements to reduce the fatty tissue in the entire targeted area.Abdominal Surgery
There are two types of interventions, depending on the extent of skin laxity. In cases of minimal skin sagging, the surgeon performs a mini-abdominoplasty. The excess skin below the navel is removed without touching the muscles. This technique reduces the risk of bleeding, leaves a moderate scar, and results in a shorter recovery time. In cases of significant skin laxity, the surgeon performs a full abdominoplasty. The excess skin from the lower abdomen is removed, and the upper half is tightened and stretched to cover an almost doubled surface area. The navel is then repositioned at its normal height through a small incision in the skin.Muscle Tightening
The surgeon tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. This tightening of the rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis) helps to recreate a strong abdominal belt, flatten the stomach area, and slim the waist.
Duration of the Procedure
The tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia and requires 48 hours of hospitalization. This procedure can last up to 3 hours.
Return to Work
Return to Work depends on the nature of the job and the speed of recovery. Patients with desk jobs can often return to work after 2 to 3 weeks, while those with physically demanding jobs may require 6 weeks or more.
It is recommended to start with light tasks and gradually increase activity based on comfort level and the surgeon’s advice. It is crucial for patients to carefully follow post-operative instructions.
Result
Swelling and possibly bruising may appear, which is not unusual. The pain sometimes experienced after a tummy tuck as part of body contouring surgery is generally easily relieved by the prescribed painkillers. Drains are sometimes placed (not routine) at the incision site to prevent fluid accumulation; these will be removed a few days after the abdominal surgery in Tunisia.
