The needs related to the chin include eliminating a double chin, reducing a protruding chin, or restoring projection to a receding chin.
Genioplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that improves the shape of an unsightly chin by restoring facial balance both from the front and in profile.
Pre-operative Instructions
Discontinue contraceptive pills or hormonal implants one month before the procedure.
No medications containing aspirin should be taken in the ten days prior to the surgery.
Smoking cessation is strongly recommended.
Course of the Procedure
Before the procedure, an initial consultation is conducted with your surgeon, providing an opportunity to discuss your needs and expectations.
A portion of the chin bone is cut and advanced forward. This segment is then secured in place using titanium plates and screws. Once healed, this part of the bone fully reintegrates with the chin.
‘Bony genioplasty’ is highly versatile, allowing the chin to be moved forward or backward, and its height and width to be adjusted. This makes it possible to either augment or reduce the size of the chin.
Duration of the Procedure
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, lasts approximately one hour, and requires a 24-hour hospital stay.
Return to Work
Resuming usual activities requires up to two weeks of rest.
Result
Bruising and swelling will appear in the first few days following the surgery.
It takes approximately six months to observe the final shape of the chin, during which time the swelling gradually subsides.
If the incision is made inside the mouth, strict oral hygiene must be maintained to ensure proper healing (including mouth rinses and antibiotics).
